Not Bad I bought this unit a couple of months ago and figured I'd give it some time to get used to it. Overall I really like this unit and and would recommend it to others. Here are some of my observations. Pros1.Display is great and although the touch screen does pause for a moment it is by no means terrible. Just enough to notice it but really not bad.2.Gps works better than my stand alone garmin 1450. I have not noticed any lag or others problems previously stated by others.3.XM works great and displays alot of info. It does take about 30 seconds to start playing.4.Startup aside from xm is normal. Based on reading other reviews I was a bit worried about slow start up but the unit really isn't that bad.
Great system I had this receiver installed at a custom shop and they did a bang up job.Lets start with the prosProsEasy to useHas a knob for the volumeBright screenEasy to see large letteringVery customizable my truck is white so i can use white lightning Uses Garmin for the Nav system very accurateYou can connect a Hardrive with mp3s and mp4s on it and the system reads them i have a 750GB passport that works greatNow the consConsSystem is kinda slow make sure to do the system upgrade its available on the websiteCant customize the icons on the home screen.Cant remove the Siruis and XM from home screen.
Won't sync phone book with AT&T iPhone 4 I have the latest software and Bluetooth firmware but I can't access my iPhone 4 contacts on the Kenwood DNX6980. If you check out Kenwood's Bluetooth comparability page you will see it isn't supported. They download but the Phonebook icon on the Kenwood stays dimmed. That is pretty lame. I can access them using my wife's BMW X5 so it isn't a phone issue. Wish I had known this before I bought it. Other than that it seems fine if a little slow.
Reboot Loop I Keep haveing a reboot issue i turn the HU on and It just keeps reloading the same start up screen over and over..
great product The Kenwood excelon arrived in a timely fashion and it was brand new in the box. It works great and it was a great price.
Excellent. I love it I bought this for my honda civic and I have to say that I love it. The navigation system is awesome.
Very good navi UPDATEnot so good Bought this navi here and replaced DNX7120 on my 2007 Lexus ES350 3 weeks ago. Installation took a while since 7120 has a moveable panel so I was able to choose a proper angle with less glare and reflection but this 6980's panel is fixed no way to adjust. I took the whole thing out drilled holes on metal frame and made the navi vertically come forward some on the top and horizontally toward driver seat little. Now reflection is less.I shopped around on a unit to replace 7120. I want a knob to turn volume easily. Pioneer X930BT is a good unit with friendly UI and it was 499 bucks after rebate last month. But the navigation is the main reason I chose DNX6980. I have installed newest software version 1.6. Now is my review on 69801. UIX930BT is little like an Apple product. 6980you need time to get used to it. Kenwood really needs some efforts on this part. But once you go through that no problem.2. NaviI like Garmin personally and 6980's navi is even better than 7120 so no complaints here. You can turn the screen to halfhalf. You use navi on left half and see the back thru rear camera or adjust audio on the right. The timing from engine started to navi map came out is 31 seconds. Still not fast but 5 6 seconds faster than 7120.3. iPodI thought it's a direct control over USB. It's only 'controlled' by USB. There's no audio out. You need a KCAIP202 cable $30! Kenwood really wants to make money on their customers. This part is my primary dislike of 6980. I then bought the cable and installed it. My child's iPod Touch 4G works well list and search both ok. Didn't test iPod too much though since I'm don't own iPod/iPhone.4. USBThe starting search time is around 15 seconds. After that change folder track no problem.5. BluetoothIt connected to my Samsung phone every single time. No problem. Just like 7120 sound quality is very good to me and the other person.6. TunerReception is as good as 7120. Cannot compare with factory radio since the factory unit was replaced too long time ago.7. Backup camera6980 has big improve over 7120 on timing.
Good Navi but that's the only good thing about it We had this professionally installed in our 2010 CRV. It is replacing a JVC KWNT1 which worked great but we dropped the removable faceplate and cracked the screen on it so time for a new headunit. When we looked at a sample model in the store it seemed decently quick. The sample model didn't have sound GPS or anything else connected.1hour later we got to try the unit in our own car all hooked up. My first thought when powering it up WTF it wasn't this laggy when we were looking at the sample model? This device is frustratingly laggy. You have to wait a few moments after touching a menu to see if the input really took. They really should eliminate all animations because they do nothing but slow down the transition from menu to menu. Flicking through menus is unreliable and not helped at all by the choppyness of the scrolling animation. There was a setup option to disable animations supposedly but that did NOTHING. The menus are not intuitive with several obscure acronyms and the unit doesn't come with a true instruction manual only a quick start guide which doesn't explain what the different acronyms are and refers you to Kenwood's website to download the actual instruction manual. I'm one of those guys who believes that if you need to read an instruction manual to figure something out it should have been designed better. Setting radio presets is a good example. On most touchscreenoperated headunits I've seen after you've dialed into the radio station you want you set it as a preset by pressing and holding on your preset list. Not so on the Kenwood. Instead there's an unobtrusive << button that then switches you to a sub menu with buttons for PS 1 PS 1 etc. NOW you press and hold on the PS 1 button to save your preset. WTF? The only good thing about this unit was the navigation. Garmin is the GPS navigation provider and it shows. Location is very precise and the voice prompts even read off the addresses and numbers. Surprisingly street name pronunciation was correct even here in Southern California where several street names have Spanish roots.
Very slow and crashes while navigating I cannot believe Kenwood released this head unit with the current hardwarefirmware. It is very very slow to respond to touch input. Selecting a track from a CD can take up to 5 seconds and the system takes about 23 minutes to reroute a missed turn during navigation. Additionally the unit has crashed twice on my while navigating. I used to be a big fan of Kenwood head units but this unit's lack of performance and stability issues has really turned me off to the brand. For a product with a > $1000.00 MSRP it is an insult that Kenwood released it to the market asis.
Very slow lag.. Well first kenwood i bought was the dnx6960 that gave to my dad in the begining didn't liked so much didn't found the interface user friendly and and took some time to get used to although that it was the best receiver that could get in the market and bought it especially because of the garmin nav it works well and got no issues at all. When i heard of the newer dnx6980 was anxious to buy it hoping it would be much better than the previous model especially in the interface. Well the interface got better alright but it really disappoints with the lag issues don't know for sure if it is a hardware or software issue but seems to be a processor problem don't have enough power already have installed the latest firmware version 1.6.0 but didn't solved navigation is practically unusable the lag is so annoying very unhappy with the performance.
