  • Great but not without its flaws There were mixed reviews on this unit but I've been pretty happy with it. It is more responsive and not quite as laggy as other units I've researched. The maps are decent but not quite as detailed as I would like them to be. The startup time could be greatly improved in my opinion but I have a remote start on my truck so that tends not to be a problem for me.The thing I absolutely hate the most is that when you are navigating somewhere the music just cuts out then you hear the voice guidance with the faint sound of your music in the background then the music comes back on then two seconds later another prompt comes up in the same manner if you are approaching a turn or exit. It wouldn't be nearly as bad if the music was mixed with the voice prompts in a better fashion. If you buy this be sure not to put anything on the SD card that came in the unit you will then need to buy a new one from Clarion. You cannot as far as I know use your own SD card with loaded content media/music you would need to use a USB drive or iPod.My iPod hooked up nicely and the unit supports music out of the box through USB. You will need another adapter to get the iPod/iPhone video working. The unit played DVD's fine and while the DVD menus are not touch capable controls will popup when you need them.I have a steering wheel and OnStar adapter Axxess hooked up and they both work great. The radio lacks some common steering wheel input commands but the basic functions are there.I got the unit from Amazon as it was the cheapest place I could find. Shipping was quick and the product was problem free so far.I would recommend this unit to those that are looking for an alternative to the common Kenwood slow Sony buggy and Pioneer crappy interface units.
Phenominal. The GPS is fantastic. All the other complaints seem to be glitches in their own system.I haven't had a problem yet.The display COULD be brighter.Thats all.
Not perfect but worth it. Features High resolution display optional Sirius Optional HD radio bluetooth and built in navigation system aux in and out for your iPod etc. Also has a DVD player and can set up an option for back seat viewing as well. Optional backup camera. Comes with remote.Pros Great screen quality Interface is easy to use Bluetooth calls are great and internal mic is decent. Navigation is accurate and very detail. Sirius sounds great DVD plays and looks well Screen is very responsive and quick. USB connection.Cons Sirius doesn't automatically go to presets when turning on unit. Long boot time. Camera is almost useless. CD can take a few seconds to load. This is my first DVD/Navigation head unit and let me say first that this Clarion NX501 is a beautiful stereo. I managed to squeeze this radio in my 2006 Dodge Dakota. Trust me this took a lot of work because my original unit was a 1.5 DIN unit. Lots of modifications to my dash with my dremil priming and wet sanding. It turned out great! still got to put final coat of paint on. If you have a car/truck that already had a double DIN radio then your installation will be very easy with a simple radio kit for your vehicle. The lay out of the wires are labeled and easy to hook up. The directions that come with the Clarion are very clear and precise. I am by no means an audio freak but I think the unit sounds great. Sirius also sounds great considering you are getting the signal from outer space. I love calling people on my Bluetooth. It does very well synchronizing my contacts. Callers are able to hear me fine with the internal mic. Many people seem to complain about this feature but may not realize there is an option to turn the mic up in the settings. There are external mics available as well but will see how the internal mic will hold up first. The boot time on the radio is the only really bothersome thing for me.
Top shelf navigation unit This is by far the best navigation unit I ever had in a vehicle. This is installed in my 2005 F150. Looks factory. The navigation is top notch. The only downside to this radio is the usb connection for the Ipod. For whatever reason sometimes you have to unplug your ipod and plug it back in to make the unit recognize it. I had a pioneer navigation in the past and I like this one better.
Almost Perfect A Definite Buy I was so happy when I bought this. I snagged it for $630 and it was worth every penny. The UI is great the feature list is deep and the performance is stellar. The GPS is the best I've ever used and that's coming from a Garmin Nuvi which I didn't think could get any better. The sound is incredible. My stock speakers in my Ford Explorer sounds so awesome now. I can only imagine what it would sound like if I had good speakers. If you buy one make sure you get a new version. Major fixes to the problems that other reviewers have mentioned have been implemented.FIXESI bought this about 4 months ago when it first came out and the external mic from Clarion did not work with it. I had to send it in and they replaced it with a newer version. The external mix now works and it is perfect. I haven't had a complaint yet from people on the other end. There has been a firmware update. Before if you turned off the radio when the input was NOT Sirius you had to reset the unit after turning on again because Sirius wouldn't work. Sirius now ALWAY turns on no matter what the input was.General Bluetooth connectivity is much improved.CONThe only real con I have is the screen. While gorgeous especially at night it is HIGHLY reflective. I've had to experiment with the angle of installation in order to get the best viewing angle. With my polorized sunglasses on it was almost impossible to read. Now it is passable. Granted it isn't ALWAYS in bright light so that is not the worst. This is the only reason I gave my review 4 stars. If the screen was a little less reflective 5 stars easily. This is really a great radio. I couldn't be more happy.
    it was soo bad
Clarion NX501 After reading the earlier reviews I was skeptical about buying this product but after purchasing it I love it. I haven't had any issues with this item and it works perfectly.
My review of Clarion NX501 JUL 2012 I just installed this unit in our 2005 Honda Element. Installation was very simple after reading the wiring diagram and buying the proper wiring harness adapter for Honda. Everything was plug and play on rear of receiver which meant I could leave off things I was not using subwoofer HD radio cords etc. This meant more room to work with behind unit for installation in smaller cars this will be helpful. I installed a backup camera at the same time and this head unit had the input already labeled for that and the wire to run to the reverse light which made the unit automatically switch to the back up camera once car was put in reverse.
Too many problems This has not worked %100 correctly since I got it. I've had it for a few months and still struggle with the touch screen. As an IT person I deal touch screen phones and other devices. I had a problem starting the Sirius. This was fixed with a firmware update and then the navigation stopped working. Calling Clarion was disappointing. They transferred me to a local installer and he told me to call back and go to the option to check on an existing case. He said that is the only way to actually speak to a customer service representative. When I did talk to the tech he was less then friendly. I shipped out the SD card and I'm waiting for it to be repaired.
NX501 Has updates on Clarion Site it works fine I have the same unit you guys do there are 3 udates on the Clarion site you could have done any of them. You are all reporting old problems. my NX501 works fine without any issues. As for the NX602 I am sure it is using the same firmware so the updates will be the same shortly if they are not already out there. Go look and see.
