Great but unfilled potential I've been a car audio enthusiast and installer for about 20 years and have a great deal of experience with automotive and other electronics. I also work in the sound/music business by trade and I thoroughly researched my purchase prior to making a commitment. SoundStream has or at least had an excellent reputation in 12 volt circles. As with all online purchases though there was no opportunity to get firsthand experience and that would have made all the difference had I tried this unit in the store I would not have purchased it. My aim is to be brutally honest. I do not want to be overly critical but I do not want to allow the highlights to overshadow reality. This is a complicated unit and there are a lot of components in the box. Caveat emptor if you do not have a professional installer's receipt you will void your warranty regardless of your skill with automotive electronics. Be sure to read my final comments on why this might be an issue. The manual is poorly written and does not explain many of the unit's functions. The included remote is complicated and cheap feeling in contrast to the rest of the unit. The receiver has a nice heft and the fit and finish is very good. The motorized screen needs clearance to extend fully make sure there is ample room but is also very solid feeling when open. The unit remembers only the screen's position and angle remaining closed when you start your vehicle. Since nearly all of the controls are on the touch screen I'd prefer at least an option for it to remember whether it was open or closed when last used. When open the rotary knob and dpad enable access to settings and adjust the screen's position respectively.
Roulette Had this Unit professionally installed. One side if the built in amp went bad before I got home. It's the last Soundstream head unit I will buy.
difficult to program issues with map We just had it installed and it must have been a return cause we can't erase the previous destinations tried but they keep coming back. The GPS map in this system is very basic my Magellan has much better graphics and is easier to program. Also the road highlighted is wrong when we are home we tried to reset it but it shows a different road that is 25 minutes away frustrating! It took us a while to figure out how to keep the cd/radio playing when the map is on too you have to push and hold a nob vertically otherwise the cd/radio goes off when you turn on the map. There is an issue with the touch screen SOMETIMES you do have to push it twice to make it do something. The plastic shakes when the screen rolls in or out too. I might put back in my old stereo system and just use my Magellan GPS.
